Feels Good to Be Back!

Ahh it feels good to be moved in. :) My second roommate is moving in today, but I did take some pictures of how the room looked after Emma and I moved in. It’s coming along quite nicely, if I do say so myself. Smaller than I expected, but Emma and I are masters at tetris, and so we’ve been able to fit everything perfectly.

So what have I been doing since I got to campus? Well, all my friends have been moving in, so we’ve been hanging out, going to Taco Bell, playing Call of Duty, moving heavy boxes in dorms and eating way too much in DS. Seriously, I’ve probably already gained a few pounds.

It’s nice to be back. Very nice :)

Happy Days

I’ve been waiting for school to start since I got out in May. Now, I’m moving back into my dorm in 5 days and starting classes in 9 and I’m seriously close to wetting my pants with excitement.

Most of my friends and family have been giving me crap for this, calling me things like geek and nerd (both of which I embrace). But my reasons for going back to school aren’t 100% academic.

Mostly, I’m looking forward to the college atmosphere again. For all of my friends to be around; for late-night runs to Taco Bell with my Wolf Pack; for being surrounded by people with one common goal: to enrich themselves with knowledge.

Because for a college student, school is no longer just about learning. It’s about living and experiencing.

And yes, I am also looking forward to the academic side of things. I miss learning, to be honest. The Professors here are some of the smartest people I’ve ever met and I love learning from them.

A New Hobby

I’ve always loved photography, but recently, I’ve developed a newfound love for the art. A good friend of mine introduced me to a new trend in photography – film. I say “new” trend, because although it’s been around for years, it’s being used by the digital generation.

I recently acquired a Lomography Fisheye lens film camera, and I love it! I’m taking my first roll of film to be developed tonight and I’m beyond excited to see what comes of it.

I think it’s important to have hobbies. Ones that take learning and practicing. It’s nice to have goals outside the academic and career world. Ones that I feel like I can accomplish, like eventually getting my photographs framed and put in a house of my own. Or maybe even selling a print or two to pay for all the film I’m going to go through.

I’m excited to see where this adventure takes me.

Pottermore

JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, has made an announcement. Pottermore is coming in October.

I’m excited. I’m a self proclaimed Harry Potter enthusiast/nerd. I started Reading Harry Potter at a young age. I’m not exactly sure how young I was, but I do know it was before I turned 11, because I was super upset when my 11th birthday passed and I didn’t get a letter to Hogwarts.

That’s a long time to be a fan of something. I’ve read the books more times than I count, I’ve seen the movies over and over and now, JK Rowling is giving us something more – an interactive, online reading experience that sounds pretty amazing.

I’ve been flailing about it all morning, to be quite honest. This is my childhood, to be honest. I grew up with Harry Potter, and I’m beyond glad it’s not ending once the 8th movie comes out.

JK Rowling, you are my hero.

Nike Training Club

This summer, I’ve decided my goal is going to be logging 1,000 minutes with the Nike Training Club app on my iPod. I won’t lie, it’s absolutely brutal sometimes. I’m currently only up to 240 minutes, but that’s been quite a journey!

It’s great though, and anyone with an iPod or an iPhone should get it, I think. It has a bunch of different work outs, depending on what a person wants to work on, with motivation, music and video to show exactly how to do each thing.

My goal, aside from logging 1,000 minutes, is to get dancer’s abs. Great motivation, though – if I log 1,000 minutes, I unlock a 15 minute workout from Lea Michele. :)

Room Planning

I move into my dorm room in a little more than 2 months. So, naturally, I’m already starting to plan out what it’s going to look like. I have a triple in Brown (three people, two smallish rooms) and space will be a bit difficult.

We’re already starting planning out organization. Lots of bins, lots of drawers. That sort of stuff. So that’s exciting. Our room that we sleep in will basically just hold everything from clothes to dishes.

Our living/studying room, though, is going to be off the hook, we hope. I just got an xbox, Emma, one of my roommates is going to get a big tv once we know what sort of space we have for it. We’re also getting a bookshelf that will hold all of our movies and games and hopefully a decent speaker system for music.

Our Friday nights just got awesome.

Smile

It’s Monday and everybody always complains about the start of the week – myself included. So I thought I’d try something different today. I’m truly going to be excited for today! But sometimes I need a little push… So I’m coming up with a list of things to smile about for today.

  • My best friend is back in the country
  • It’s a beautiful day
  • After work, I’m going to a grad party
  • After the party, I’m going to play video games
  • Payday is on Friday
  • I have a yummy sandwich to eat at lunch
  • There are ducks in the pond outside my office

Always remember to smile at the little things. Because those are the best :)

A Way to Keep Busy

Idle hands are the devil’s workshop, right? So this summer, I found a way to keep my hands busy. It’s nothing special to most people, but after I got my first summer paycheck, I ran to the store and bought myself a brand new xbox 360.

I’m super excited about it. I can stream Netflix movies to my TV through it, play games with my friends on xbox live, and even update my Facebook status through it, if I so choose.

More than anything, I’m excited to put it in my dorm room this fall. I can load music on it and play dvds with it. I’m looking into getting a nice speaker system, and my roommate, Emma, is going to be getting a widescreen TV. That and a mini fridge filled with Mt. Dew is basically my dream room.

Do You Know How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse?

With the supposed rapture a couple weeks ago and the crazy severe weather we had last night, I got to thinking. How many people in Fargo/Moorhead really know how to survive if a zombie apocalypse hits us?

Being a college student, I’ve seen zombie movies and played zombie video games and, naturally, have thought a lot about what I would do if zombies invaded. I’ve compiled a few tips that I think help.

1. Know what you’re dealing with. Zombies come in two basic forms. The kind that are truly the walking dead and the kind that are created through a mutated virus. The second kind is more likely to happen, in my opinion.

2. Be prepared to run. Survival is key. Even if you’re prepared to fight back, know that you might have to run a lot. Distance yourself from your targets before turning around and opening fire.

3. Make sure they’re dead. If you don’t hit a zombie just right, it may not die right away. Instead of wasting bullets on a double tap, a bat, axe, or boot to the head will work just fine.

4. Get to high ground. The higher up you are, the more zombies you can see. You also stay safer the higher up you are.

5. Form alliances. You’ll need all the help you can get.

6. Don’t let yourself get bitten. Self explanatory.

Happy Summer!

For most school goers, Summer is just about to start. For Concordia students, we’re on week 4 of our vacation. I, for one, wish we would go a bit longer, because campus is amazingly beautiful in the Summer and not many students get to see it!

The grass is a stunning green, there are cute ducks in the pond and there’s always choice parking.

This is the first Summer I’ll be working full time, so I won’t get to enjoy the beautiful weather so much during the week, but weekends will be full of soaking up the sun (or rain) and enjoying life.

I’m looking forward to the Corn Feed later on this summer. One of my favorite things about being a Cobber!

Just look at all that green
